WELL VAULTING AND VENTING

Some urban wells are required to be enclosed in a vault due to their location either under paved surfaces, next to buildings, or in green spaces.  This is the case whether the wells are actively producing or plugged and abandoned.  The ODNR does not require that plugged wells be vaulted unless they have developed a leak due to poor plug placement.  However, some municipalities do require vaulting and/or venting of all plugged wells.  It is always best to check with the local building department when plugging a well.

Gibson Energy Services recommends that any well that is under an impermeable surface (i.e. pavement), or within 10 feet of a building, be vaulted and vented.  We can install well vaults and locate vent risers to minimize their visibility as needed.

Well Plugging

Well plugging involves the placement of cement or grout (cement and sand mixture) in a well to prevent oil and gas migration or leaks.  In Ohio, oil and gas well plugging rules are made and enforced by the ODNR Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management.  All well plugging activities in Ohio requires an ODNR plug permit.  Well plugging is witnessed by an ODNR inspector.

Gibson Energy Services provides complete well plugging services.  We have extensive experience in plugging commercial and domestic oil and gas wells.  We prepare plugging permit applications and we plug wells using the most cost conscious and responsible methods, while making minimal intrusion to a property.  We can provide ground surface restoration as needed.
